Brian matches the flowers in front of our room :)
Our room rate included breakfast, which is normally a buffet. Since we were the only people at the resort, the staff said they would be preparing us a special breakfast.
Their special breakfast pretty much consisted of a bunch of stuff they had leftover that somewhat resembled a meal. I mean, they gave is cookies. For breakfast. I'm not complaining, it was just funny to me.
Our spread
Once we finished our breakfast, we packed up our stuff and got ready to head to the port to catch our ferry. The entire staff at the the resort was coincidently catching the same ferry, so we were able to ride with them. We were ready to go plenty early, so we sat around and waited for the bus and made a new friend.
I named her Cora.
So, we sat around waiting for people to leave for the ferry. And we waited. And waited. With about ten minutes until our departure time, the staff finally decided it was a good time to pack up and leave. I was getting really anxious because we could.not.miss.this.ferry. If we did miss it, we would be stuck on Folegandros until the next ferry came five days later. Not ideal. I probably checked the time fifty times on the ten minute drive to the port, silently praying that the bus would get us there on time.
As we are driving down the road someone yelled, "The ferry's arriving." We were on a huge hill headed straight for the port, so I could clearly see the ferry hitching itself to the port in the distance. Naturally, the bus driver raced down the road toward the ferry, well beyond a safe speed. As soon as the bus stopped, Brian and I grabbed our shit and booked it for the ferry. We made it in plenty of time, but it still stressed me out unnecessarily.
On a boat.
I took the opportunity on this ferry ride to take some pictures of Folegandros island, since we didn't actually see much of the island the one day we spent there.
I also took some more pictures as we reached our destination. The view from the ferry was so different than the view on the ground, I found it really fascinating and beautiful.
It looks like the mountain has a face, tee hee.
Vathi Beach
Our destination was another small island, Sifnos. Below is the main port of Kamares, where we stayed while on the island.
Our hotel was close to the water, and offered some seriously amazing views.
An almost panoramic shot of the view from our hotel room
We grabbed some gyros for lunch down by the water and contemplated what we were going to do that day.
All the gyros in Greece had fries on them. Kinda weird, but also delicious.
Unfortunately, Brian wasn't feeling very well on this day, so we spent most of the day inside. It didn't take long for me to get bored and restless, I wanted to see all the things! Eventually, Brian felt better enough to go out, so we decided to stay close and visit this church we could see from outside our hotel window.
Agia Marina
I love self timers.
Agia Marina, up close
We took a few pictures once we got to the top, the mountains on one side and the almost empty beach on the other.
We headed back to the hotel where we couldn't quite see the sunset from our room, but we could see the beautiful hues leftover in the sky.
For dinner, we headed down by the water to a Greek-French restaurant called Absinthe. Sifnos must be a very popular destination for French people, since all the other vacationers we encountered were French.
We started with some baked mizithra, to continue my quest to eat all the cheese Greece has to offer. Brian had some lamb and I had a curry chicken dish.
Noms.
Up next, more of Sifnos!
That ride to the ferry would have stressed me out! Glad you made it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think the Greeks were laughing at how stressed it was making me. Oh well.
DeleteIt's very common for sandwiches and salads to have fries on them here. Most restaurants have a "Pittsburgh Salad" -- when you see that, you can count on fries!
ReplyDeleteThat's true, there's something in central IL called a horseshoe which is a sandwich of meat, fries, and melted nacho cheese (aka a heart attack). I've never heard of salads with french fries though, that's very interesting!
