The one downside to this news is that Finding Dory is not scheduled to be released until 2015. (I know that's only two years from now, but I constantly think that 2000 was only a few years ago, not thirteen, so my concept of times is off).
So, in honor of this news, I thought I would share my list of the best and the best-worst sequels.
The Best Sequels:
Father of the Bride Part II
Even though I now find the plot of a mother and daughter being pregnant at the same time to be a little creepy, when I first saw this movie back in the day it seemed so charming. Now that I'm grown and understand Our Bodies Ourselves better, I try to ignore the bizarre story line and focus on what's truly important in this movie: Martin Short as the gregarious interior decorator.
Iron Man 2
I fully expected to hate the first Iron Man movie, and was pleasantly surprised when I found I really liked it. Not thinking lightening could strike twice, I again had doubts about Iron Man 2, and I was again proven wrong. Lots of action, an all star cast, and witty dialogue made this a superb sequel in my book.
Toy Story 2 & 3
The Toy Story franchise just gets it right. Their movies are always the perfect mix of new characters and stories, while playing off the bittersweet nostalgia of the old movies and the viewer's own childhood. I think they could make ten Toy Story movies and every one of them would be a winner.
Best-Worst Sequels:
Speed 2: Cruise Control
As a rule, I dislike when sequels or a movie series replaces a main character, so this movie was flawed from the start when Keanu Reeves was replaced Jason Patric (who? exactly.). The idea that cruise ship is in anyway in imminent danger of speeding into anything is just absurdly hilarious. So, even though this sequel fails in a lot of aspects, it wins at being awesomely bad and entertaining, even if you're just laughing at it.
Scream 2
The thing that made the original Scream movie good was the unexpected, gratuitous gore. Remember how poor Drew Barrymore got hacked within the first few minutes and everyone was like, whoa, so that's how it's going to be?! (that may have just been my reaction) Well, I feel like Scream 2 wanted so badly to be just as shocking that they just decided to make the same movie. And while there are some really entertaining parts to this movie, it kind of makes fun of itself, which means I should probably make fun of it too.

ReplyDeleteI watched the first 10 minutes of Scream, then freaked out and wouldn't answer the phone for a month.
lol "so that's how it's going to be" My old roommate and I would always quote the third Austin Powers movie way more than the first two, which is arguably the worst of the 3, but we had it on DVD and the others were on VHS, so they never got watched. We always laugh about how we have a shared love of the third Austin Powers movie haha
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Toy Story 3! And I'm so excited for Finding Dory, too--although I so wish they would make an Incredibles sequel. I thought of all of the Disney-Pixar movies, that was the one that really set up a sequel most!!
